What is ETS?
ETS (Engineering Tool Software) is the official software used for programming KNX devices. It is developed by the KNX Association and is the only official configuration tool in the industry. Without ETS, it is not possible to assign addresses to a KNX device, create group bindings, or define scenes. The software runs on Windows and macOS. A free Lite version is available for KNX partners.
How does KNX programming work?
KNX devices carry a bus connection and a programming button. After connecting to the KNX line, they receive a physical address through ETS. Then group addresses (for example, the address controlling a specific light) and parameters (dimming speed, scene transition time) are assigned. A KNX USB Interface or IP Interface is needed for the programming process. ETS keeps the entire project in one file, which is used for later changes or troubleshooting.

The stages of a KNX project
A KNX project goes through these stages: First, the functions required in each room are determined from the architectural plan. Then device selection is made (actuators, sensors, panels). The project is created in ETS, each device receives a physical address, and group addresses are defined. After the devices are mounted on site, they are loaded through ETS. The final stage is commissioning and testing.
Can the user make changes?
No. KNX programming is a specialist field and is done by authorized KNX partners. At the user level, selecting a scene on the touch panel or adjusting the temperature from an app is possible. But adding a new device, redefining a group, or changing a scene requires ETS access. This is not a disadvantage; it is a feature that ensures the system's reliability. It prevents unauthorized changes.

ETS has a project backup feature. After a failed upload, the previous backup can be restored. The device hardware is not damaged.
